3D/4D Ultrasound Technology provides superior clarity & detail

For expectant mothers and their doctors, seeing the baby’s growth is more than just a joyful occasion. To safely view the growing baby in utero, parents and doctors have relied on traditional 2D ultrasound technology as an essential element of prenatal care. Unfortunately, image quality is not always consistent—images can often appear grainy, ambiguous, or lacking in clear detail.

However, the recent emergence of advanced 3D and 4D ultrasound technology has made it possible to see the growing baby in high resolution. Unlike traditional 2D ultrasound, 3D and 4D ultrasound provide images with superior clarity and life-like detail. Parents can appreciate getting an intimate look at their baby, while doctors can get a more accurate view of the baby’s health and development.

Frequently Asked Questions about 3D and 4D Ultrasounds

  • What is a 3D ultrasound?

Like the traditional ultrasound, 3D ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to form images of your developing baby and is administered in the same way. The difference is the sharp, photo-like quality of the images. 3D ultrasound enables a clear and detailed view of the baby’s anatomy, right down to the facial features.

  • What is the difference between 3D and 4D ultrasound?

3D ultrasound creates 3D still images, while 4D ultrasound creates moving 3D images, akin to a live 3D video. 4D ultrasound lets you see exactly what your baby is doing at the moment—whether it’s smiling, sleeping, crying, or yawning.

  • What are the benefits of getting a 3D and/or 4D ultrasound?

For parents-to-be, the excitement of getting a good look at their baby’s face for the first time is benefit enough. For doctors, it offers the advantage of earlier diagnosis and treatment for potential defects or abnormalities, such as a cleft palate, spina bifada, and skeletal deformities. Most importantly, a 3D or 4D ultrasound can provide is a measure of clarity and certainty for parents and their doctors.

  • When is the best time to get a 3D ultrasound?

You can choose to get a 3D ultrasound anytime during your pregnancy, either to supplement or to replace a traditional ultrasound. However, most medical providers will recommend getting this type of ultrasound when you are between 24 to 34 weeks into your pregnancy. Before 24 weeks, the baby’s tissues won’t be as well formed, so a 3D ultrasound won’t really be able to show much more than a traditional ultrasound. Week 24 to 34 is more ideal, because your baby’s tissues and organs will be developed enough for proper viewing.

  • Should I get a 3D or 4D ultrasound?

We offer the option of 3D and 4D ultrasound for our patients because of the obvious advantages that advanced quality imaging can offer to expectant mothers and their doctors. However, there are some things to consider before you opt for a 3D or 4D ultrasound.

For instance, some insurance companies won’t cover 3D or 4D ultrasounds unless it’s been prescribed for strict medical reasons. Some parents may decide to buy keepsake 3D or 4D ultrasound from a non-medical provider, because they understandably want beautiful photos of their babies. While 3D and 4D ultrasounds are generally safe and radiation-free, repeated or prolonged ultrasound sessions may expose you and your baby to unnecessary health risks. Also, getting a 3D ultrasound too early in your pregnancy doesn’t offer any real benefit. During the early stages of pregnancy, a 3D ultrasound is unlikely to show anything that can’t be seen in a traditional ultrasound.

Ultimately, choosing a 3D or 4D ultrasound is a personal decision and every expecting mother’s prerogative. As you enter the advanced stages of pregnancy, it’s emotionally exciting, but also very critical for you and your doctor to get a better look at your baby. Whether you choose a traditional ultrasound, or decide on a 3D or 4D ultrasound—the only thing that truly matters is ensuring the best medical care for you and your baby.
